Hospital School Garden

The staff and students at St George Hospital School have taken advantage of a beautiful vacant outdoor space on the children's ward and are in the process of turning it into a vegetable & fruit patch and also making it an enjoyable seat to have some respite. We have started with a lemon tree, tomatoes, basil, rocket and some beautiful succulents.Stay tuned to see the progress on the garden and what yummy things we plant next.

St George Illawarra Dragons Visit

On Wednesday 15th May we were lucky enough to get a visit from the mighty St George Illawarra Dragons players.All the children on the ward and in the school room were beside themselves with excitment as the boys spread some cheer and gave out some memorabilia for everyone to take home. It was a great day. Good luck to the Dragons for the rest of the 2019 season!

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence 2018

On Friday the 16^th March 2018, Australian schools stood united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).

The Students at St George Hospital School used their imagination to create a poster supporting the cause in imagining a world free from bullying which we proudly displayed in the hospital corridor.

In the days leading up to the NDA we walked the hospital ward and gave out wristbands to all children, parents and staff to help take a stand and spread the word, that bullying is not ok.

Valentines Day 2018

On February 14 we celebrated Valentines Day here at the Hospital School. Leading up to the day we had the students create a beautiful poster for the school room wall and created decorations for our cupcakes.

We had a busy morning baking fresh cupcakes and celebrated by sharing them with all the wonderful people we are surrounded by.

It sure was a Happy Valentines Day.

Shrove Tuesday 2018

On Tuesday 13th February, 2018 our school celebrated Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday. It was a busy morning for some of the senior students helping cook and prepare around 80 pancakes. Students, parents and hospital workers enjoyed the delicious pancakes with the smell lingering in the corridors for the remainder of the day. Yum!!

On Thursday 24 August, St George Hospital School hosted the 2017 book week. Staff and Children came dressed as their favourite book characters and stories were shared by Doctor Bob. A little bit of Roald Dahl was thrown in for some magic as Matilda teaches the children a lesson or two. The students produced a delicious morning tea, enjoyed by students, parents, hospital staff and community members.

Harmony Day 2017

On Tuesday 21 March St George Hospital school celebrated Harmony Day. The morning tea was attended by students, parents, medical staff and members of the community. Our school was also visited by dignitaries from the International School. Our food technology students created a sumptuous morning tea including hot and cold delicacies.

Students were preparing for Harmony Day over the past month, participating in activities promoting harmony between all cultural groups and focusing on the 2017 theme of " Everyone Belongs. "

Pancake Tuesday at St George

On Tuesday 28 February, 2017 our school celebrated Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday. Around 100 pancakes were made and the delicious aroma of the cooking brought students, parents and hospital workers to the schoolroom to partake in warm pancakes covered in maple syrup. Delicious!

On 1st August, 2014, the St George Hospital School celebrated Education Week with a sumptious morning tea offered to all students, parents and hospital staff. This day coincided with Jeans for Genes Day. There were many blue decorations and everyone was wearing blue jeans and blue accessories. The school raised over $100 to be donated to The Children's Medical Research Institute. It was a great opportunity to broaden the community's knowlege of the function of the hospital school.

Harmony Day 2014

On Thursday 20 March our school celebrated Harmony Day by inviting students, parents, doctors, nurses, school staff and community members to our multicultural lunch. The students and staff cooked and brought along chilli con carne (meat), vegetarian chilli con carne, fried rice, dolmades, spring rolls, guacamole, lamingtons and fresh fruit. The homemade sausage rolls were the biggest hit with none available for afternoon tea. We had such an orange day with staff dressed in orange, orange tablecloths and tableware. Saturday Soccer App

The St George Hospital School is proud to introduce their own app, Saturday Soccer created by the students at this school. The students wrote the poem contained in the app which is illustrated by the mischievous boy in the illustrations and animations of the app. The fun and educational elements are now freely shared with other kids in Australia and around the world. Don't miss out on a chance to enhance your child's education experience. The free app provides opportunities for your child to experience sportsmanship and participate in counting, spelling and reading. The app comes with five games targeted at kids between 3-7 years.

Director for a Day - Education Week

On Tuesday 30 July St George Hospital School was visited by the Director of the Georges River Network, Anne Ross. Accompanying her were two local students Medina Crcic from Moorefield Girls High School and Jason Hou from Sydney Technical High School. These students were visiting schools with Ms Ross to share the experience of a busy directors day. They were treated to a sumptuous afternoon tea and participated in activities with the students in the classroom. Both students have enquired if they may come to visit again as part of a work experience program. Of course we would love to have them!

Staff development day term 3 2013

On Monday 15 July, 2013 our school attended the NSW Art Gallery Education Course. Our program included a tour of the gallery, the gallery's website and resources, interpreting and appreciating works of art including Margaret Olley's work. Along with four other hospital schools we were involved in activities, role play and appreciating skills and art making ideas for K-6 students. We were tutored in practical strategies for approaching the 7-10 syllabus and 11-12 syllabus including a focus on developing an understanding of the conceptual framework and the frames plus a focus on supporting students preparing for the HSC.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC celebrations are held around Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. St George Hospital school students have created their own Aboriginal Art and our NAIDOC canvas has been hung in the Children's ward. This year we have also made a knitted wall hanging in Aboriginal colours. Our school staff appreciate all the efforts of the students who have contributed to this celebration. Biggest morning tea

Last Thursday 23 May, 2013, St George Hospital School hosted a morning tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council. We had visitors from the International Language School, doctors, nurses and students from various wards throughout the hospital. The school staff did most of the cooking including home made sausage rolls, cakes, tarts and a huge fruit platter. Our morning teas are always well attended and appreciated by the hospital staff, patients and family members. Our visiting school students are encouraged to assist at these functions and are to participate as much as possible.

Harmony Day at St George

On Thursday 21 March students, parents and hospital staff were invited to a special morning tea to celebrate Harmony Day. The theme this year was 'Belonging'. Students wrote stories about where their families originated from and their experiences living in Australia. Well known Australian and international dishes including lamingtons, tzatziki and hommus dip, hot cross buns, poppy seed cake and fresh fruit were enjoyed by the huge number of visitors to the school.

Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser

On Tuesday 6 November our school played host to over 30 hospital staff, parents and students at a Melbourne Cup Afternoon Tea. Students cooked and decorated cupcakes and scones and made fresh cucumber sandwiches as part of a stunning high tea presentation. By 5.00pm over $150 had been raised for Breast Cancer Awareness. Book Week at St George

On Friday 24 August St George Hospital School hosted a Bookweek Morning Tea for students, parents and hospital staff. Attendees brought along their favourite book to read and students made sausage rolls, scones and other goodies for approximately 30 visitors to our schoolroom. The principal of our school read The Rainbow Fish and Dr Bob read the prologue from Crime & Punishment. Doctors, nurses, parents, students and community members dropped in to investigate the newly purchased award winning books including "The Runaway Hug", "Crow Country", "a Bus called Heaven and "One Small Island". All students coming to the classroom have been encouraged to borrow these books during their stay.

Multicultural health week

On Wednesday 5 September, thirteen students from Lorikeet Pre School visited our hospital school. They brought along some very healthy kebabs and bread to contribute to our healthy multicultual lunch. Our students, parents, staff and community members joined in the fun squeezing fresh orange juice, munching on fresh fruit and healthy chicken kebabs cooked on our new barbecue. The students created a very informative poster depicting healthy foods and healthy activities and incorporating different languages. Thank you to everyone for making this day a wonderful experience for our students and the students of our local pre-school.

Education Week at St George

Forty nine school age students visited St George Hospital School during Education Week, 30 July to 3 August, 2012. These students contributed to creating a distinctive poster entitled "Creating the Future". On Thursday 2 August, the school invited students, parents, school and hospital staff and interested community members to a barbecue held in the new garden area adjacent to the Children's ward. One of our long term students cooked the sausages and we went through four dozen sausages and bread rolls. One of the wonderful ward grannies donated two trays of lamingtons which were long gone by 3.00pm. The school was acknowedged for its contribution to the hospital and lifting the spirits of inpatients and their families. Please look at the Education Week photo gallery on our website.

Generation Next mental health and wellbeing seminar

On Friday 20 July 2012, five staff of St George Hospital School attended The Mental Health & Wellbeing of Young People Seminar at the Wesley Conference Centre in Sydney. Topics included Eating Disorders, Mental Health for Girls, Drug and Alcohol Update, Cyberbullying and the impact of inappropriate use of the internet on Young People. Speakers included Andrew Fuller, Psychologist and Resilience Expert; Steve Biddulph who is now focussing on Girls issues; Paul Dillon Drug and Alcohol Research and Susan Mclean, Cybersafety Expert. All staff expressed their appreciation of being able to attend this professional development day. It is crucial for our staff to be aware of the pressures and issues experienced by our students, many of whom come to us while inpatients at the hospital.

Community Art Display

The school continues to expand its display of artworks, both on the children's ward and in the hospital entrance. Students from local schools have also been invited to display their work on a rotational basis. 18 high quality framed artworks from St George Girls High School are presently on display.

This display will be extended in 2011 with photographic works from students at George's River College Penshurst Girls Campus.

This initiative has provided an opportunity to promote the school as well as develop positive community relationships.
